HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on September 7, 2011
        
The meeting was opened at 10:19 a.m. by Chairman Sue Sanders

PRESENT:  COA members: Diane Balderelli, Bruce Mahon, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon Brad Noble, Jack Reed and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders, and Outreach Worker Deb Tierney.

ABSENT:   Earl Johnson.
        
MINUTES:  Motion by Diane to accept the July 6, 2011, minutes was made.  The minutes are corrected to reflect the correct time for Movie Night as 6:30 p.m. instead of 7:00 p.m.

REPORTS

OUTREACH WORKER – Deb submitted a written report which was distributed.  In August, two medical professionals spoke about their specialties.  Representatives from Radius Healthcare of Southbridge and Worcester were present at one of these presentations and offered to pay for the lunches of all present, which they did.  Radius will also be providing a cookout at the Senior Center on September 15th at noontime in order to introduce themselves to the community.  Sue McNulty from Radius will be providing a blood pressure clinic once a month. • We have been informed that there will be no public health flu clinics this year due to reduced amounts of vaccine and no money to pay people to go into the field to administer the vaccine.  CVS in Palmer has agreed to hold a clinic at our Center on Tuesday October 11th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Wales Senior Center will be participating in this clinic.  Permission granted by the COA. • Denise Pontbriand will return on Wednesday October 26th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. with a presentation on osteoporosis.  This will be funded by our regular budget and not the grant budget.  Approval granted. • Approval was give for Deb to attend a conference on Friday October 9th in Northampton.  The only cost would be mileage.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.  In August, 1397 contacts were made and 110 seniors were served.  539 attended the Center, 216 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (100), COA meeting (8), senior tax work off (17), cards & games (94), exercise (121), stained glass (77), movie (6), entertainment  programs (20), speakers (62), Veteran’s agent (13), computer (11), crafts (10), meetings  (10), gardening (6) phone calls (95).

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM:  Margaret Crock - As August 31, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $1,862.00, Town Clerk $266.00, Assessor’s Office $48.00 and Holland Elementary School $24.00.  Year-to-date total is $2,200.00.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday and Wednesday – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday gentle Chair Yoga from 10:00 to 11:00 with Eva.  Small fee per class.  Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $20/month.  Call Tom Baltazar 413 245-3163 to register; craft class 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc, Activities Coordinator. Wednesday 10:00  to 11:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Tai Chi from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. with David Masera, small fee per class; craft classes with Linda Artruc and guest artisans 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday Computer classes 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15-3:00 p.m.  Weekdays:  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work.  We have exercise equipment available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  No fee.  Wednesday, Sept. 7 10:15 COA meeting; Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11:00 a.m. 9/11 memorial service at Monson Memorial Hall.  For info, contact John M. Comerford, Veterans’ Agent, at 413 267-4140; Monday, Sept. 12 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Gene and Mary Campbell’s book forum and signing; Thursday, Sept. 15 at noon, cookout courtesy of Radius Healthcare; Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 20 and 22, 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. decoupage with Linda Artruc; Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 11:30 a.m. blood pressure clinic with Sue McNulty, RN.  Wednesday Oct. 5 at 10:15 a.m. COA meeting; 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. AVADA hearing screening.  Call for appointment at 245-3163; Tuesday, October 11 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. flu shots by CVS.  Wales Seniors will join us.  Bring your health insurance cards and possibly your medication list; Monday October 17th at noon review of Medicare; Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 18 and 20 from 1:00 to 2:45 scrapbooking with Linda Artruc; Wednesday Oct. 19th at 11:30 a.m. blood pressure clinic.  Computer classes will be starting this week from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.  Please sign up. • Tom Baltazar asked to expand stained glass classes to every Thursday evening.  Motion by Diane to expand stained glass classes to every Thursday evening.  Discussion followed weighing the pros and cons.  Voting: 1 in favor, all others opposed.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer - August Treasurer’s report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00.  Telephone: $54.48, water testing $15.00, Tai chi instructor $120.00, supplies for Outreach $44.08, supplies for Senior Center $345.85, trash pickup $54.46, National Grid $57.29, printing and mailing of newsletter $139.97, Eva Pittsinger $300.00, yard care $99.75, All State fire inspection $135.25, salaries $1,478.60.   

MANAGER:  Don Sanders – Don reports the emergency lighting needs to be repaired due to the storm.  He also suggested that we purchase a gas grill for use by the Center.  Motion by Diane to purchase a gas grill subject to approval by the Chair and the Treasurer was unanimously carried.

Motion by Brad to accept the above reports was unanimously approved.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:   
  • The Friends of the Holland Seniors’ proposed craft fair has been cancelled.
  • Copies of the job posting and application form for Margaret’s position were distributed.
  • Don approves holding the barbecue on September 15th.  42 people have signed up.
NEW BUSINESS:  
  • An interview committee to meet with applicants for the Director position was discussed and will consist of Brad Noble, Margaret Crock, Bruce Mahon and Sue Sanders.  Motion by Diane was unanimously approved.
  • Receipt of notice of approval of our well was announced.
  • Preliminary review of FY 2013 submissions was distributed.
  • Requests for use of the Senior Center were reviewed and approved.
  • Diane Balderelli tendered her resignation to the Council.
  • Bruce Mahon will move from the position of Alternate to Member-at-Large of the Council.
  • Clarification of wording in Margaret’s Overall Job Function section B was discussed and approved.  Motion to change the wording to “The Director may consult with the Outreach Worker on various projects” was unanimous.

Motion to adjourn made by Sue at 11:40 p.m. was unanimously carried.
